Behind the Clay

Hi, I’m Shaye—the hands, heart, and headful of ideas behind Clay by Shaye.

In the middle of what can only be described as a mid-30’s life crisis, I hit a wall. I desperately needed a creative outlet—something tactile to ground me and pull me back into the present.

For the price of a small fortune, a cozy garage-turned-studio (garudio), and endless hours of practice, I decided to learn how to throw pottery right at home. One day I just woke up and decided: that’s exactly what I’m doing.

From the moment I centered my first lump of clay on the wheel, something ignited. I fell head over heels for the whole slow, messy dance—the earthy smell of wet clay, the slick glide between my fingers, and that deep flow state where the noise of the world fades away and the line between creator and clay disappears.

Pottery as a Canvas for meaning

For me, making pottery isn't just about shaping functional everyday vessels; it’s about what those pieces carry.

I’ve always felt a deep connection to symbols, music, and imagery. My favorite part of the process is pressing meaning directly into the surface—weaving in words, song lyrics, thoughtful quotes, and symbolic marks that speak to life’s quiet, sacred moments. Whether it's a line from a song that got you through a hard week, a motif that grounds you, or a phrase that brings a daily smile during your morning coffee, I love creating pieces that tell a story.

Bring Your Vision to Life

Beyond my own collections, some of my favorite work comes directly from custom requests. Have a meaningful quote, a special date, a favorite lyric, or a unique symbol in mind? I love collaborating on custom pieces—taking ideas floating around in your head and turning them into tangible, tactile art you can hold in your hands every day.

The Sacred Art of Wu Wei in Pottery

In a world hooked on instant gratification, pottery is a quiet rebellion. It’s a daily practice in Wu Wei—the ancient Taoist practice of "effortless action" or working in harmony with the natural flow rather than forcing it.

You quickly learn at the wheel that you can’t force clay into submission; if you push too hard or rush, it collapses. Pottery demands that you drop your ego, listen to the medium, and step into effortless alignment. Every stage has its own rhythm—shape the form, wait for leather-hard, trim every curve, let it dry completely to bone-dry, bisque fire, glaze with care, and fire again.

It’s a humbling art that teaches you to let go of control, release attachment to perfection, and trust the process as each piece finds its own natural form.

Nothing tops cracking open that kiln after a long burn and pulling out a finished mug or bowl—made over days, stamped with heart, and carrying a message that’s meant to last.

Thank you for being here, for supporting handmade art, and for letting my work bring a little extra intention, music, and beauty into your home.
